You, the People

You the People is an unprecedented network of European-based historians of the United States.  It brings together twenty-five scholars from eleven countries to explore the effects of national location on the writing of American history, using Europe as a case study.

This collaboration emerged from conversations between historians from the Oxford Centre for Research in United States History (OxCRUSH) and the Centre d’Études Nord-Américaines (CENA) at the Maison Française d’Oxford in 2008. Following a preparatory workshop held in Paris in 2009, a series of research questions were framed. Thanks to a substantial grant from the Leverhulme Trust, a formal network was established on 1 June 2010 and will run until 31 October 2011, based at the History Faculty in Oxford. The network is led by Stephen Tuck (OxCRUSH) and Michael Heale (Lancaster) in the United Kingdom, Cécile Vidal and Nicolas Barreyre (CENA) in France. The Heidelberg Center for American Studies and the University of Jena in Germany are partner institutions.  The network submitted a roundtable to a leading historical journal in February 2011 and convened at the network conference in Oxford on 30 June-2 July 2011.  The network will present its conclusions in a book and at future network events.
